"PART 1 Mediation Please respond to the following: Response doesn't have to be lengthy" From the e-Activity, determine and explain two (2) steps a negotiator can take to avoid having to use mediation or arbitration during the negotiation Propose why a mediator needs to maintain a position of being neutral third party within the mediation process of a conflict resolution. Suggest specific attributes of President Carter’s approach that enabled him to appear as a neutral party during the conflict between Egypt and Israel, as discussed in Chapter 34 of the text. "PART 2 PLEASE RESPOND TO STUDENTS COMMENT POSTED BELOW, NO MORE THAN A PARAGRAPH" From the E-Activity, I felt that the buyer was taken advantage of the seller's kind heart, I think this happens a lot. For example I have an account at work that is always taking some kind of deduction from their payment. Deductions taken are anywhere from a shortage to a carrier damage. First the buyer is to file claims with the carrier for damage that is done, due to the fact we are F.O.B, meaning once the shipment leaves the dock it is the buyer's responsibility. The sales person on the account is constantly telling me "Oh, don't worry about that $30 damage, by the time you do the research and copy the paperwork and mail it to them then you will have more than $30 into it and we may never get that money" which she may be right but if we do it one time then they expect us to do it every time. Of course, this has happened, Anything under $100 she wants me to credit to there account and not worry about disputing the claims. My theory is this adds up and eventually cost us. So yes I feel the buyer was taking advantage of the first discount or gesture so let's keep asking each time.So the first step is to stand your ground and make a point stating "this is a one time deal". The second step is to allow yourself to bring in a third party to help neutralize the situation. Without involving a 3rd party, President Carter would not have become such a success as a mediator at Camp David. Carter tried for many years to get both sides to work together that he was at a "deadlock" whereas, Nixon came in with fresh eyes and ears to see and listen to each side and ask questions that should have been asked but again Carter was "tired" and "drained" from working both sides for a long time. Without Nixon there would never have been a solution and an end to the crisis. "PART 3" "Be Prepared to Walk Away" RESPONSE DOESNT HAVE TO BE LENGTHY From the e-Activity, suggest at least two (2) decisions an effective negotiation needs to make when the need to walk away is evident even before the negotiation session begins. Provide at least two (2) examples in which you need to be prepared to walk away in personal or professional situations to support your rationale. John, an employee at the hypothetical Rowers Company, has requested a meeting with his supervisor in order to review his written request for a salary increase. Determine the best Roger Dawson approach that John should take in defending his written request for a salary increase. Provide a rationale to support your response.
