Persuasive Paper
Assignment
Persuasive Paper
Using appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos, students will write a five page persuasive paper following instructions in handout (posted in Moodle). [This is that handout.]
Guidelines
• All papers must be in APA format.
• Papers must have a cover page with a separate running head from that of the following pages.
• Papers must have a title that is not merely the assignment. Make a statement with the title.
• No abstract required for this paper.
• Headings and subheadings are optional, but must follow APA format.
• A minimum of two articles are required for your References page (see below), which must be in APA format, hanging indent, and alphabetical order by author's last name.
• Remember to submit papers to both Moodle and Turnitin.com.
• When writing and saving your paper, put your last name as the first word in the file title.
Topic
For the persuasive paper, you must find an article or web page that is, in itself, persuasive. In your paper, you will take the opposing side to the article and point out the methods (using quotes and proper APA citations) the author or authors use to be persuasive. After pointing out the article's methods of persuasion, give your evidence and support it using at least one additional article.
State your argument (thesis statement) in your first paragraph. Everything after that must support your argument.
Pathos, Ethos, and Logos
As discussed in class, there are three major areas of persuasion, pathos, ethos, and logos.
Pathos is an emotional appeal. Persuasion that use pathos try to instill sentiment, ourtrage, fear, and other emotions to influence their audience.
Ethos is a moral/ethical appeal. The appeal here is to a cultural, social, or religious right and wrong.
Logos uses logic to make and support its point. They state their argument and use evidence and logic to support that argument.
