(1) What is the difference between Escaping TO Freedom and Escaping FROM Freedom? (2) Can one ever be unconditionally, unequivocally free? (3) Describe Hobbes' original state of nature and how it would factor into escaping to and from nature? (4) How does the chain of mutually assured destruction>>>mutual deterrence>>>mutual security connect with Hobbes' original state of nature? (5) Without authoritarianism, what would be the positive and negative outcome for the individual and society? (4a) Is authoritarianism always tyrannical? (6) How does Fromm's explanation of sado-masochism guide the interaction between the individual and society? (6a) Identify which party of the individual and society is the sadist and which party is the masochist AND, if these roles change, how they change. (7) Can destructiveness, as described by Fromm (F, pp. 177-182), benefit the individual and society? If so, how is there a benefit? (8) How does Fromm's discussion of automatonconformity apply and/or not apply to today's individual (in America or elsewhere)? (9) Could freedom of the individual negate freedom in the social community and could freedom in the social community destroy freedom for the individual? (10) Explain how the film "Cast Away" (will be seen in class) connects to escaping TO and/or FROM freedom.
