Objective 602.6.1-26: Use an example from the history of science that demonstrates for students the changing nature of scientific theories.
Given:
The term theory has very different meanings in science and in everyday use. The colloquial use of the word theory comes close to what scientists mean by a hypothesis. In science, a theory is more comprehensive than a hypothesis. A theory, such as Newtons theory of gravitation or Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection, accounts for many observations and data and attempts to explain and integrate a great variety of phenomena. Such a unifying theory does not become widely accepted unless its predictions stand up to thorough and continual testing by experiment and additional observation (Campbell & Reece, 2005, p. 451)
Task:
Write an essay (suggested length of 2-3 pages) in which you use an example from the history of science that demonstrates the changing nature of scientific theories. In your essay:
A. Discuss what a theory is.
B. Identify an example from the history of science that demonstrates the changing nature of scientific theories.
C. Discuss the history of the theory you chose (e.g., how the theory has evolved, what the theory evolved from, key players in the propagation of the theory).
D. Explain how you could use this theory to teach students about the changing nature of scientific theories.
E. When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
