The battery-powered brush starts collecting data when a user begins brushing. The smart brush may seem like overkill considering the price - $270.00 Canadian. By contrast, Amazon sells [ordinary] brushes for as little as $1.50 Canadian.” Suppose that estimates for the “smart brush” suggest that at a price of $150.00 they would have North American sales of 15,000 brushes whereas at a price of $350.

“Beauty brands l’Oreal and Karastase want to make bad hair days a thing of the past. The two companies have teamed up with tech company Withings on a Hair Coach Brush that uses a microphone, gyroscope and other sensors to monitor how fast and how hard a person is brushing. An accompanying app recommends how to brush for optimal quality and minimal breakage and split ends. It can also take into account hair-influencing factors like heat of humidity and even discern if hair is wet or dry. The “smart brush” has been garnering buzz at the [Consumer Electronics Show] CES tech show in Las Vegas.” The battery-powered brush starts collecting data when a user begins brushing. The smart brush may seem like overkill considering the price - $270.00 Canadian. By contrast, Amazon sells [ordinary] brushes for as little as $1.50 Canadian.” Suppose that estimates for the “smart brush” suggest that at a price of $150.00 they would have North American sales of 15,000 brushes whereas at a price of $350.00, they would achieve sales of 7,000 smart brushes. i. Using the values provided above, and the “POINT/SLOPE” FORMULA approach demonstrated in class, determine the SLOPE and the INTERCEPT for the L’Oreal and Karastase smart brush AND the resulting INVERSE and NORMAL Demand curves. ii. Using the NORMAL Demand Curve found above, determine the Quantities Demanded if the price increases from $175.00 to $200.00 AND then the value of the Own-Price Elasticity of Demand (or the Demand Elasticity) for the L’Oreal and Karastase Hair Coach brush. iii. Carefully explain how the “sign” and the “magnitude” of the elasticity determined in part ii above would be interpreted? iv. Suppose the market’s INCOME increased from $60,000.00 to $70,000 and, as a result, the demand for the L’Oreal and Karastase Hair Coach Brush increased by 4,000 units at every price point. Using these new values, determine the value of the Income Elasticity? v. Carefully explain how the sign of the elasticity determined allows us to describe the “type” of good the L’Oreal and Karastase Hair Coach Brush is assumed to be and why.

  • thank you. for the first part; should it not be 15000=m (150 -350) + 7000 (instead of 700) ? and doesn't 15000=m (150-350) = 7000 =6800.0 ??

  • Do you have any question regarding the comments?
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 05:16 AM
  • -1000/13500*100 = -7.40740741 does it not? So where does -1000/135 come from again?
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 05:45 AM
  • It's the same... Just simplification. Note that also - 1000/135 =-7.40740741
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 05:50 AM
  • 1000*100 = 100000/5 = 20000 135000*100 =1350000/5 = 270000 BUT you just simply to get -200 over 27 right?
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 05:54 AM
  • 2500 over 187.5 = 40 over 3. But how did you get that again?
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 05:56 AM
  • Divide by 62.5
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:05 AM
  • Why do you divide by 62.5 ?
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 06:09 AM
  • To leave the answer in the simplest form possible
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:10 AM
  • But it is all the same with the figure above it
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:11 AM
  • Yes, okay got that! But where did the number 62.5 come from? How do you know to divide it by that number
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 06:12 AM
  • If you use a scientific calculator, it will give you the answers in its simplest form. Mine was to examine the factor used to produce the answer in its simplest form.
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:14 AM
  • I really like your perspective and arguments
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:15 AM
  • Also, by diving 2000 by 187.5, the only number that gives whole numbers for the numerator and denominator is 62.5
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:18 AM
  • Anything else that seems to be unclear?
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:19 AM
  • Sorry I just like to have everything broken down; so I understand it completely. I know I am kind of slow but I like to understand every little thing. And I still do not understand the 62.5... Lets just say If I was to have this question on an exam or what not.. I wouldn't know where to get the 62.5
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 06:24 AM
  • Dividing both sides by five gives =−200 OVER 27. Also for this point... why did we divide by 5 again?
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 06:24 AM
  • You don't have to guess numbers to simplify. You just need to divide what you have. If you divide 2500 by 187.5 you'll get 13.3, which is essentially 40/3
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:28 AM
  • Don't guess these numbers. Just divide what you have
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:29 AM
  • Are you allowed to use calculators? Because, -1000/135 is equivalent to -200/27. I actually indicated (divide by 5) to show you the factor that was used. However, it is important you note that -1000/135 is equivalent to -200/27
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:32 AM
  • Can you write 13.3 rather than 40/3...
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 06:36 AM
  • I get you understand you both sides by 5. But again where did the 5 appear from? OR how do we know to divide by 5 ...
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 06:37 AM
  • -1000/135 is equivalent to -200/27 but again what if we left it at -7.40740741 ...
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 06:38 AM
  • 13.3 is the decimal form of 40/3. If you want me to change, I can write it as 13.3. Both are correct and is the same thing
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:38 AM
  • Do you have a calculator with you? If YES, divide -1000 by 135.
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:39 AM
  • I have change 40/3 to 13.3 and have uploaded a new file
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:44 AM
  • is everything clear now?
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 06:50 AM
  • Yes, yes I understand now!!! And then again just 1 more time; the divide both sides by 5; why is that again
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 07:09 AM
  • For simplification purposes
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:14 AM
  • Do you use calculators in you class?
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:16 AM
  • Yes we do. I just wouldn't know to calculate it by 5 for simplification purposes
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 07:21 AM
  • Sometimes you can be doing the calculations wrong, but know the equation
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 07:22 AM
  • If you have a calculator, divide -1000 by 135. Tell me your answer
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:22 AM
  • -7.40740741
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 07:23 AM
  • Great! If you change that to a fraction using your calculator
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:25 AM
  • Let me know your answer
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:25 AM
  • I believe you got -200/27. You don't need to know the actual factor that the calculator used. I actually indicated that factor to make it easier for you to understand. You don't need to know these factors. They are behind the scene process that are performed by the calculator or an advanced scholar.
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:29 AM
  • I would advise you to focus on just the division part. Don't try to memorize these factors. Just use your calculator
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:30 AM
  • -7/27
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 07:34 AM
  • Your answer is wrong. You did it wrongly -7.40740741 changed to fraction can't be -7/27
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:38 AM
  • By logic, -7/27 will give you -0.259, which is not -7.40740741
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:39 AM
  • I don't know how to convert -740740741 to a fraction
    User_19727 | Feb 12, 2019, 07:40 AM
  • I am hoping you have taken some mathematics classes or statistics classes before. Whatever we are discussing is basic mathematics for grade 4 and 5
    tutorforyou | Feb 12, 2019, 07:40 AM
