1. Explain how each theory explains social life. Please remember the historical context for these two theorists. Marx and Durkheim witnessed the social changes that arose during and after the Industrial Revolution (the birth of sociology). How did these two men react to these social changes differently? Be sure to include this context as you explain their theories. 2. Once you have done that, we can touch upon how they compare to each other. Are they different from each other? Are they the same? If so, how? 3. Finally, talk about how each theory would explain the role of Education in the US today. To Durkheim, what "function," or purpose does education have in society? What does education do for individuals and for society as a whole? As for Marx, how does education perpetuate inequality between the "haves" (bourgeoisie) and the "have nots" (proletariat)?
