This means that the younger you are, the more susceptible to being influenced you are.

Suicide “outbreaks” or “clusters” are when a group is influenced to commit the deed. Kurt Cobain was a Seattle celebrity musician whose suicide was very famous back in the 1990’s. The media used the situation to advertise for mental health awareness and to talk about his family’s loss. This caused less suicides and more talking and calling into the suicide prevention hotline.

  • “13 Reasons Why” shouldn’t have been aired in the first place. Following its airing, it was “associated with a 28.9% increase in suicide rates among U.S. youth ages 10-17.” Netflix went out of its way to ignore psychology professional's advice that it would do just that, putting children and teens at risk on purpose! I think if they were going to do that show, they should've done a better job at clarifying that suicide is not an option and focused on mental health and better options more.

  • As for school shootings, I believe it is a similar phenomenon. The fact that they give so much insight into the person behind it while glorifying it and them, this causes some to be influenced. If these people are on the edge of a breakdown, seeing the shooting as an option sets them up for bad decisions. I think focusing on the heroes, influences people to be heroes. Overall, suicide is a topic that gets rightfully dwelled upon in social media, but the way social media talks about it is what should change.

Yes, suicide contagion is more common among youth with 5 percent of young people being influenced by suicide. Suicide outbreaks/clusters are when one person commits suicide and others follow in a large amount.   • Based on the information in the article, I think they should stop making the show "13 Reasons Why" because its doing more harm than good. For instance they keep coming out with new seasons that are going more off topic than what the original reason for the show was for. Also the show is increasing suicide rates as much as a 28% increase in suicide among young people between the ages 10-17. Yes, newer medias like Netflix should abide by the rules of traditional media because Netflix is just coming out with new seasons and not caring about the effects it could have on its viewers. And finally I personally don't think the media is giving much attention to suicide as much as school shootings, because the media can talk about the school shooting for hours, but a suicide only gets a couple minutes

  • Suicide contagion and outbreaks is the exposure to suicide or suicidal behaviors within one's family, one's peer group, or through media reports of suicide and can result in an increase in suicide and suicidal behaviors. In the U.S. analysis shows at least 5% of youth suicides are influenced by contagion. Suicide "clusters" are real phenomena; one death can set off others. There's a particularly strong effect from celebrity suicides. I'm not sure which celebrity from Seattle we were expected to talk about but I researched and found the suicide of Kurt Cobain. They talked about his addictions and the note he left to daughter. Based on the information in the articles I believe there's no point for 13 Reasons Why to stop because the damage has already been done. I think the series has done more harm than good as the suicide rate correlated with a 28.9% increase in the U.S. youth the month following the release.

A study in Vienna documented a significant drop in suicide risk when reporters began adhering to recommendations for coverage. I do think that the media giving attention to school shooters is similar in effect to giving attention to suicide. The media should focus less on the shooter and more on the heroes of the situation. I don't know for sure whether this would prevent more school shootings but it would give people hope in dark situations. My question would be how the media would prevent repetitive or prominent suicide stories.
