Topic Prompt:
The authors of chapter 16 assert, "For immigrants themselves, America could be disorienting, liberating, and disappointing." In a 3 page essay, describe the experiences of Eastern and Southern Europeans and Chinese immigrants to the United States during the 1900s. What factors encouraged immigrants to seek entry into the United States? What do the cartoons embedded in chapter 16 tell us about some Americans' attitudes toward American view these "new Immigrants." Read the Chinese Exclusion Act (Chapter 16 Document 16.4). What alleged problem did the Chinese Exclusion Act hope to solve? Why were Chinese people continually referred to as "Chinese laborers" throughout the Chinese Exclusion Act?
Guidelines
Consider the question. Make sure that you answer fully each question in the essay prompt.
Your opening paragraph introduce the main idea that you would like the reader to understand after having read your paper. The introduction also should introduce the reader to what you will cover in the essay. Think of the introduction as a road map for the reader.
Many effective opening paragraphs include a thesis statement.
A thesis statement:
tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
makes a claim that others might dispute.
is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.
