1) What is the difference between income and wealth? What do you think we should be more worried about (assuming we should be worried about either)--wealth or income inequality?
2) What kinds of people in the U.S., especially those we might not typically think of as being poor, have no accumulated wealth?
3) What, if anything, does the first video tell us about social mobility in the U.S.--the ability to be born to a family in, say, the bottom quintile (20%) of wealth, and go on to rise up to the middle quintile? The top quintile? How does the data from the New York Times article help us answer this question? And what does all of this information tell us about equality of opportunity in America? Is equality of opportunity real, or just an ideal that we don't live up to?
4) Do you believe that the distribution of wealth and/or income in the U.S. is just or unjust? Why? Justify your opinion in a paragraph or more. Or, if you are ambivalent about the issue, explain what information you'd need to have over and above what the videos provide to be able to come to a conclusion on your own.
5) If you believe that the current distribution of wealth and/or income in the U.S. is unjust, what ought to be done about it? What policies might the government at either or both the federal and the state level enact to level the playing field? What might ordinary citizens do? If you don't believe that the current distribution of wealth and/or income in the U.S. is unjust, how might you going about convincing those on the other side that they're simply misunderstanding an obviously complicated set of issues?
