Instruction
1. What does it mean when sociologists argue that gender is socially constructed and that gender socialization explains much of the gender differences we see, choosing two separate aspects of family to give an example from.
2. Why do sociologists look at race and ethnicity when studying families? Discuss two separate examples, discussing the type of family, the patterns that exist and why.
3. Discuss norms of sexuality and how it is related to gender. Give two examples of how sexuality/gender affect the ways families interact and are perceived.
4. Choose an aspect of family and briefly describe three different points in time, highlighting the societal changes of that time period which led to ideas about this aspect of family changing or evolving.
5. You are at a family function and a family friend starts talking about their relative who is going through a very difficult divorce which is making them depressed and the children seem to be very upset over the divorce. Another family friend says that divorce is destroying society, and that the government needs to make getting a divorce much more difficult so that couples and families’ lives wouldn’t be ripped apart. How could you respond using what we read and discussed in class to offer a sociological perspective on divorce, marriage and possible solutions?
