Part I: Answer the following two questions in a 1 - 1.5 page essay. 1.) Race and imperialism: Use the documents in Chapter 20 and materials presented in class to answer the following question. What role did ideas about race play on both sides of the debate over whether the United States should annex the Philippines? 2.) Gender and the 1920s: How did the cultural changes of the 1920s both liberate and create new pressures on women? Your answer to this question should be your thesis statement, and you can use evidence from the textbook and PowerPoints in addition to your analysis of the movie “It” to answer the question. Here is the YouTube site for the movie “It.” The segment we watched begins at 15:36 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4MOQSRC_bM&t=2182s Part II: Answer the following question in a 2-page essay. 1.) The Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935 and created much of what we call the nation’s “safety net.” It was intended to provide economic security for U.S. citizens during periods of hardship. Read the text of Frances Perkins’ radio address to the nation that she gave as the act was under consideration by Congress. The address is available at: https://www.ssa.gov/history/perkinsradio.html (If for some reason the link does not work, Google “Frances Perkins Social Security Radio Address,” and you will find it.) In a two-page essay, answer the following questions: How does Perkins justify why the United States needs the Social Security Act? (The answer to this first question should be your thesis.) What groups of people would the act protect, and why did Perkins consider them the most vulnerable and in need of help? Why does Perkins emphasize that the United States needed a Social Security Act because the nation had undergone rapid industrialization? (Think about how the vulnerable groups that Perkins identified would have been assisted in a rural rather than industrial economy.) How did prevalent thinking about gender roles inform the Social Security Act?
