Assignment - PART 3-Experiential Learning Project - Working with a Child with a Disability
In Module 1 you were introduced to the major assignment for this course . . . the Experiential Learning Project (Working with a Child with a Disability) both as an assignment as well as in the first synchronous session. At that time, you were urged to begin work on this assignment because of the effort that would need to go into it. In Module 3 Assignment 2 you were asked to identify and describe the student with whom you would be working and discuss the strategy you selected for the assignment. The project in its entirety is due now in Module 7.
Instructions:
The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to implement an evidence-based strategy, technique, or method designed to teach a specific strategy, skill, or content to a student with special learning needs or mild intellectual disabilities. The strategy or technique may address any skill or content area (e.g., reading, writing, spelling, math). Here are the steps to complete:
Locate the student with whom you will work for this assignment. This may be a child, adolescent, or even a young adult. The student may have an identified specific learning disability or other mild disability (such as mild intellectual disability). Also, you may choose to work with a student whom you suspect may have a learning problem because of his/her academic performance.
Observe the selected student in at least three sessions (40-45 minutes each) to determine the specific skill or knowledge the student needs to be taught.
Research and select an evidence-based or recommended strategy (or combination of strategies) to use with the targeted student for improving the specific skill deficit.
Apply the strategy or teach the student the technique during four sessions of 30 minutes each.
Once you have finished the above steps,(ALREADY DONE IN DOCUMENT 1-PLEASE UTILIZE THE INFORMATION PRESENTED) compile your findings into a report for submission to your course instructor. The report must include the following:
Identification of the skills deficit or problem.
Provide a short description (age and grade) of the student. Then describe the specific learning problem or skill deficit demonstrated by the student which was the focus of this activity based on the three observation sessions described in #2 above. Note that NO PERSONALLY IDENTIFYING INFORMATION should be included for the student anywhere in this report.
Develop a specific objective.
Develop one specific objective that you would like to attain after working with the child. The objective should be related to the specific skill or topic to be taught. Examples: student will use capital letters at the beginning of sentences 90% of the time; student will correctly add two digit numbers 95% of the time; student will read aloud three letters words 90% of the time. Please note that, because you have a relatively short period of the time to work with the student, it is best not to expect great accomplishments; be realistic in your expectations.
Description of the strategy used (before its implementation).
Detail step by step the strategy or technique that will be used to improve the child’s deficit or specific learning problem. As appropriate, include graphs and figures. References should be made to the developers and previous use of this strategy (i.e., who developed the strategy, with what populations was it used before, how successful has it been in the past, etc.).
What happened during the implementation? What is the short-term impact on the student?
Write a description and evaluation of your experience of applying the evidence-based strategy with the student with a disability. Outline exactly what happened in the three sessions (session by session) in which the strategy or technique was applied, including the specific procedures used, the child’s reactions, the short-term impact (improvement, no-change, detriment, etc.). Respond to the following:
Did the strategy work?
Did the student enjoy the activity?
Did the student show any improvement?
Did the student achieve partially or fully the objective specified in #2 above?
Long-term impacts.
Based on your findings, hypothesize what could be expected to occur if the method would have been used for a longer period of time with this specific child.
Submission Instructions:
Your response should be approximately five pages in length, not including the cover and References page. It should be edited for minor grammatical and spelling errors and adhere to the general writing style and formatting guidelines of the APA Manual (6th ed.).
THIS ASSIGNMENT IS A 3 PART ASSIGNMENT. PART 1 AND 2 HAVE ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED AND NEEDS TO BE USED TO COMPLETE PART 3. PLEASE ADHERE TO THE INFORMATION PRESENTED IN ALL DOCUMENTS. THIS ASSIGNMENT REQUIRED ME TO TEACH A STUDENT FOR four sessions of 30 minutes each. (WITH A DISABILITY), FOCUSING ON THEIR ACADEMIC WEAKNESSES AND RECORD MY OBSERVATIONS. PLEASE SEE ALL ATTACHMENTS. THE ASSIGNMENT DETAILS FOR PART ONE WOULD NOT UPLOAD FOR SOME REASON. PLEASE SEE ASSIGNMENT ONE DETAILS BELOW AND REFER TO DOCUMENT 6 FOR MY SUBMISSION TO PART ONE. DOCUMENT 3 AND 4 ARE THE DETAILS AND SUBMISSION FOR PART 2.
Assignment one details - Experiential Learning Project: Working with a Child with a Disability
The major assignment for this course is the Experiential Learning project: Working with a Child with a Disability. The description of the project along with the rubric used to assess it can also be found in the course syllabus as well as in the Assignment in Module 7.
Because this is a large assignment, read through it and begin work as soon as possible so you can complete it by its due date of Module 7 Day 7 (Sunday, December 8, 2019, 11:59 p.m. EDT). As you will read in the description of the project, its purpose is to allow course students the opportunity to implement a strategy, technique, or approach to teach a specific strategy or skill to a child or adolescent with special learning needs. The student you select to work with in this project should be one you suspect may have a learning problem because of his/her academic performance; the student does not necessarily need to have actually been identified with a particular exceptionality. You may select a child, an adolescent, or a young adult to work with in the project.
You will see the word "specific" repeatedly in the directions for the assignment because for this project you must focus on a very concrete skill (for example, a child who has problems using capital letters at the beginning of a sentence). The purpose of this project is not to try to make a big change in the child's performance but a small and specific change that you could describe and measure.
In this module, you will identify a student with whom you will work for this assignment. Submit one or two paragraphs with a short description of the child/adolescent. Please be sure to include no student names or personally identifiable information! anywhere in this project. Submit this by Day 7, Sunday, October 27, 2019, 11:59 p.m. EDT)..
Once you have access to the child and are able to observe his/her, identify an area of skill deficit for the student. When you know this target instructional area for the student, find a strategy to use with the student in your project. The strategy should, of course, fit the specific skill that you wish to change.
