JON.Standardized Procedures allows nurse practitioners the ability to perform functions which would otherwise be considered the practice of medicine. Therefore, an NP cannot practice without SPs. Standardized Procedures are authorized in the Business and Profession Code, Section 2725 and further clarified in California Code of Regulation CCR 1480. If SPs are not written and practiced in the correct manner, it leaves the NP vulnerable for a BRN disciplinary action.

  • The NP must follow SPs that are within her/his scope of practice. (Balestra, 2017) Standardized Procedures are documents that allows nurse practitioners, consistent with the collegial NP-physician relationship, to diagnose, treat, and manage health conditions within the nurse practitioner scope of practice in order to meet the primary health care needs of clients. In my perspective, it is really important to adhere and strictly follow because it states and clarifies the scope, role and limitations of the APRN or the Nurse Practitioner in a clinical practice. It is a legal mechanism for APRN or Nurse Practitioner to perform their functions. As mentioned above, a Nurse Practitioner cannot practice without Standardized Procedure.

  • I think that in a lawsuit, the one that will be asked in a potential trial is "Was there a Standarized Procedure or Was it strictly followed?" Also, if it’s completely followed, it will prevent the APRN or Nurse Practitioner for a disciplinary action from the Board of Registered Nursing and prevent the chance of being sued in a malpractice setting. Consulting physicians are available to the nurses in person or by telephone (DCA, n.d.).
